Pre-Tax Benefit Programs

Health Care Savings Account (HSA)

  • Carrier: Select Account
  • Purpose: Used for out-of-pocket medical expenses on a pre-tax basis
  • Requirements: Must be paired with the High Deductible Health Plan
  • Maximums:
    • $3,350 for an individual with self-only coverage under a high deductible health plan
    • $6,650 for an individual with family coverage under a high deductible health plan

Flexible Spending Account (FSA)

  • Carrier: Region 1
  • Purpose: Used to pay for medical and/or dependent care expenses
  • Maximums:
    • $2,550 for health FSAs
    • $5,000 for dependent care FSAs

Retirement Program
  • Carrier: Public Employees Retirement Association of Minnesota (PERA)
  • About PERA: This retirement program was enacted by the Minnesota Legislature. Membership is automatic for non-elected public employees who meet position eligibility requirements set by Minnesota Statute. Contributions are based on gross salary.

Deferred Compensation

  • Carriers: Nationwide and ICMA
  • Plan Type: 457 Programs
  • About Deferred Compensation: This retirement program is available to employees of state and local governments. It allows participants to save for retirement by deferring a portion of their income now and paying taxes on it at withdrawal.
  • Maximums:
    • Employees can defer $18,000 per year (0-100% of income)
    • Participants age 50 and older may defer an additional $5,500 per year
