Winter Recreation Activities

Enjoy winter with this comprehensive list of winter fun in Moorhead!
Opportunities include ski and snowshoe rentals, outdoor and indoor skating, sledding hills, events and more!

Warming houses and activities will close if the temperature is -10 degrees or below, the wind chill is -30 degrees or below, or the ice is deemed unsafe/unskatable.

Lone Skier on Trail

 

 

 

Groomed trails await cross-country skiers and trail goers in the following park locations: Gooseberry, Homestead, Horn Park, Woodlawn, River Oaks Point, M.B. Johnson, and Viking Ship Park.

Rental equipment will be available at the Hjemkomst Center for use around Viking Ship Park (Cash and Check payments only). Not open on holidays.

Saturdays 10am-4:30 pm, Sundays 12-4:30 pm

Winter Trail Etiquette

  • Foot Traffic: Please keep to the right going up and the left going down. Avoid groomed classic lanes. 
  • Snowshoeing and dog walking: Please avoid the classic lanes. Dogs must be leashed and waste removed from trail; stay on the edge of trail.
  • Skate Skiing: Please start in the middle and avoid skating in the groomed classic lane.
  • Slower Skiers yield to faster skiers and be courteous to other trail users.
  • HAVE FUN!

All warming houses and rinks are open during regular scheduled hours. 

Locations with warming houses and lights: Hansmann Park; Lamb Park; Morningside Park; Ridgewood Park; Riverview Estates Park; and South Park.

 

Additional Rinks: Alm Park (Lighted General Rink); Voll Park (General Rink); Trails at Stonemill Park (Lighted General and Hockey Rink).

 

2023 and 2024 Rink and Warming House hours include:

 Monday-Friday  4-8 pm
 Saturday-Sunday
  1-8 pm
 Holiday Hours (Dec 22 - Jan 2)
  1-8 pm

Holiday Hours (Jan 15 and Feb 19)

Sledding Hills

Looking for somewhere to sled in Moorhead? We have a few parks with kid-friendly hills that, once covered in snow, will be ready for fun!

 

Locations: Horn Park, Riverview Estates Park, Viking Ship Park, Woodlawn Park, and Village Green Sixth Park.

Open Gym Information

BASKETBALL & VOLLEYBALL OPEN GYM

Improve your basketball or volleyball skills with open courts and nets. Participants will have the opportunity to play pickup basketball or volleyball games. Designated times for youth (15 and under). Basketballs and volleyballs will be available. 

 

Located at the Community Life Center

Youth: Oct 1 – Mar 31 | Sundays from 1-6 pm | FREE

 

ADULT PICKLEBALL OPEN GYM (16+)

Get active and compete against friends and others at adult open pickleball! This program is for all ages and skill levels. Equipment is available for use; players will rotate every 20 minutes. 

 

Located at the Community Life Center|$5/Day or $40 Punch Card

Oct 3-Apr 30 | Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-9 pm

Apr 6-27 | Saturdays 9 am-1 pm

Apr 7-28 | Sundays 1-5 pm


* No open gym on October 26 and 31, November 23, December 24, 26 and 31 or March 21 and 31.
