Winter Recreation Activities

Enjoy winter with this comprehensive list of winter fun in Moorhead!
Opportunities include ski and snowshoe rentals, outdoor and indoor skating, sledding hills, events and more!

Warming houses and activities will close if the temperature is -10 degrees or below, the wind chill is -30 degrees or below, or the ice is deemed unsafe/unskatable.

Lone Skier on Trail

 

 

 

Groomed trails await cross-country skiers and trail goers in the following park locations: Gooseberry, Homestead, Horn Park, Woodlawn, River Oaks Point, M.B. Johnson, and Viking Ship Park (illuminated trail).

 

UPDATE: March 31 will be the last day trails are groomed for the season, due to the groomer needing some extended maintenance. Thank you to all who enjoyed the trails this season!

Winter Trail Etiquette

  • Foot Traffic: Please keep to the right going up and the left going down. Avoid groomed classic lanes. 
  • Snowshoeing and dog walking: Please avoid the classic lanes. Dogs must be leashed and waste removed from trail; stay on the edge of trail.
  • Skate Skiing: Please start in the middle and avoid skating in the groomed classic lane.
  • Slower Skiers yield to faster skiers and be courteous to other trail users.
  • HAVE FUN!

Outdoor Rink Update as of 01/12/2023:

Stonemill Park rinks are now open!


All warming houses and rinks are open during regular scheduled hours. 

 

 

Locations with warming houses and lights: Hansmann Park; Lamb Park; Morningside Park; Ridgewood Park; Riverview Estates Park; South Park; and Village Green Park

 

Additional Rinks: Alm Park (Lighted General Rink); Voll Park (General Rink); Trails at Stonemill Park (Lighted General and Hockey Rink).

Looking for somewhere to sled in Moorhead? We have a few parks with kid-friendly hills that, once covered in snow, will be ready for fun!


Updated December 28, 2022:

Riverview Estates Sledding Hill warming house will be open 1-8 pm following the skating rink holiday hours.

 

Locations: Horn Park, Riverview Estates Park, Viking Ship Park, Woodlawn Park, Frostival Slide at Viking Ship Park- January 14-February 25, 2023.

Open Gym Information

Improve your basketball or volleyball skills with open courts and nets. Designated times for youth (15 and under); and adults (16 and over). Basketballs and volleyballs will be available. This is a fee free program, no cost to participate!
