“All Aboard Minnesota” Exploring Expanded Rail Transportation Options to/from Moorhead

Post Date:10/25/2019 7:35 am
All Aboard Minnesota is a non-profit education and advocacy group focused on expanding and developing intercity rail transportation options. This organization has identified Moorhead/Fargo to the Twin Cities as a population corridor that could greatly benefit from additional, reliable and daytime rail service as part of a network of convenient routes. The All Aboard Minnesota team is coming to Moorhead October 30 for community conversations about how this could happen.

More frequent, convenient rail transportation options could bring economic development opportunities to our region and improve mobility options for our residents—especially during those winter months when we can’t always safely drive to the Twin Cities. We also know reliability is important. All Aboard Minnesota indicates that Amtrak and the Federal Railroad Administration are working with freight railroads to improve on-time performance for all Amtrak trains that are hosted by them.

Q: Are the commuter trains planned to run on existing railroad tracks, or new lines?

A: The proposal is to use existing railroad lines already connecting us to the Twin Cities on the current Amtrak route through St Cloud. The concept is a daytime train leaving Moorhead/Fargo in the early morning; returning west from St Paul in the early evening.

Q: Is BNSF Railway “on board” with this plan?
A: Additional passenger rail service from the Twin Cities to Fargo/Moorhead is part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation State Rail Plan, which has been presented to BNSF and all partner freight railroads. BNSF has not yet formally commented on the proposed Twin Cities to Fargo/Moorhead additional service.

Q: Where can I learn more?
A: You are invited to attend a meeting at the Hjemkomst Center, 202 1 Ave N, Wednesday, October 30 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm to learn more about the possibilities for expanded rail transportation options.

Please join us for this important public input event at the Hjemkomst! See you there!
