Fair Housing in Tenant Screening

Post Date:03/04/2019 11:59 am

A reminder to our rental property owners and managers from the Moorhead Human Rights Commission:

A January 16, 2019 news report featured a woman who was seeking an apartment in Moorhead, when a prospective landlord inquired about her race/national origin during the tenant screening process.

The Moorhead Human Rights Commission notes that fair housing investigation and enforcement lies within the jurisdiction of the State of Minnesota or the federal government. Therefore it would not be appropriate for the City of Moorhead Human Rights Commission to comment on the specifics of this matter except to say that discrimination of persons based on race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, disability, public assistance, sexual orientation or familial status is illegal and unwelcome in our community.

In 2017, the Moorhead City Council approved a resolution supporting an Inclusive Community to further support all members of the community and condemn act of discrimination.
