Officers Joshua Schroeder and Trent Bachman are the first Moorhead officers to receive the Medal of Valor service award for their actions on June 6, 2012. Field Training Officer Joshua Schroeder and partner in training, Trent Bachman, responded to the 3500 block of Village Green Drive for a reported burglary in progress. As they were arriving they were informed that the male suspect was suicidal and that family members were physically fighting with him. The suspect was reportedly threatening family members with a knife and a shovel, described as a long handled dirt spade. Officers Schroeder and Bachman encountered the suspect, numerous family members and neighbors in the yard of the residence. Amongst this chaotic scene, the suspect turned and attacked the officers with the dirt spade. Officer Schroeder was struck by the dirt spade prior to the officers being able to use a taser and pepper spray. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility for treatment.
