On the River

Moorhead Parks & Recreation and River Keepers partner to offer the following activities:

 

 

Canoe and Kayak Rentals

Experience the Red River in downtown Moorhead first-hand! Paddle the Red River and enjoy scenic views and great exercise.

Life jackets (PFDs) and paddles are included in the rental of each vessel from Hjemkomst Landing.

CANOE AND KAYAK RENTALS ARE OPEN MAY 28-SEPTEMBER 7!

Closed Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Saturdays 11 am-6 pm  |  Sundays 12-6 pm
$10/hour/vessel

Vessels are rented on a first-come, first-served basis for use at the Hjemkomst Landing,
202 1st Ave N, Moorhead only.

Group paddling rentals are available for parties of five or more. Reservations must be made for at least 2 hours or a $100 minimum rental fee. Group rentals are not available during regular rental hours (see above) and are dependent on staff availability. Reservations must be made at least 14 business days in advance by calling 218.299.5078.

RENT A SPOT ON THE HJEMKOMST LANDING VESSEL RACK

Register to rent one of the 12 seasonal canoe or kayak storage spots at Hjemkomst Landing on a first-come, first-served basis. Renters provide their own locks and are responsible for removing vessels in case of impending flooding.

$50/season  |  Register online or by calling the Parks Office at 218.299.5340.

 

2024 River Paddling Excursions

Join Moorhead Parks and Recreation and River Keepers as we take a journey on the Red with our River Paddling Excursions. All skill levels are invited. Each session begins at 6 pm with the basics of canoeing and kayaking. Please arrive by 5:30 pm to get checked in. Pre-registration is required as vessels are available on a first come, first served basis. Registration closes at 20 vessels/excursion. Excursions begin at the Hjemkomst Center landing.

May 29: Recreation of the Red River, led by Midwest Outdoors
June 12: Birds of the Red River, led by Audubon Great Plains
June 24: History of the Red River, led by the Historical & Cultural Society of Clay County
July 10: Discover the Red River, led by River Keepers
July 24: Animals and Habitats of the Red River, led by the Red River Zoo
August 7: Gentle Mind of the Red River, led by CJM Yoga 
August 21: Conservation of the Red River, led by Midwest Outdoors
Sept. 4: Trees of the Red River, led by Fargo Park District

$15/person for canoe/kayak rental OR $10/person if providing own vessel. Register online.

 

Adopt the Red

Volunteers are needed from May-October to pick up litter along river corridors (10 river zones to adopt). Help out as a one-time group or Adopt the Red for the season!

Cast your line on the Red! Enjoy shore fishing at Gooseberry Park, Viking Ship Park, Riverfront Park, Memorial Park, North Dam, River Oaks Park - South Dam, and M.B. Johnson Park (boat ramp dock and fish-cleaning station available).

Bridge Status

River Corridor Plan

The City of Moorhead has adopted the River Corridor Plan; envisioning a continuous trail along the Red River, this path will ultimately run through Moorhead, connecting M.B. Johnson Park in the north to the Bluestem Center for the Arts in the south, and beyond. The plan involves adding several new amenities along the way, including natural resource rehabilitation, interpretation, and playful trailhead park amenities. To obtain these goals, the City has applied and been awarded numerous grants to help fund installation of the trail. Continued grant application is still in process to fully complete this plan.
