Chris Helmick Sworn in as new Chief of Moorhead Police Department

On Monday, April 14, Chris Helmick was sworn in as Moorhead’s Chief of Police.

"We're excited to welcome our new Chief of Police to the City of Moorhead.” said City Manager Dan Mahli. “This marks an exciting new chapter for our Police Department and our community. With strong leadership, a deep knowledge of public safety, and passion for the community he lives in, the Chief will move us forward as we keep Moorhead a safe and welcoming place for all."

“I’m honored to serve the Moorhead community and lead a department filled with dedicated, professional officers and staff. I look forward to building strong relationships, fostering trust, and working together to ensure Moorhead remains a safe, vibrant, and inclusive city for everyone,” said Chief Helmick.

Helmick previously served with the Fargo Police Department (FPD) from 2001 until he retired on April 4, 2025. During his time with FPD he reached the rank of Captain, and his final assignments were with the Criminal Investigation Division, Neighborhood Services Division as well as the Professional Standards Division. Additionally, he has served as Lieutenant for the Criminal Investigations Division and Neighborhood Services Division. He holds a Bachelor of Criminal Justice from Minnesota State University-Moorhead and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Chief Helmick and his family are longtime residents of Moorhead.
