Census 2010

What is the Census?

  • The census is a count of everyone living in the United States every 10 years.
  • The census is mandated by the U.S. Constitution.
  • The next census is in 2010.
  • Your participation in the census is required by law.
  • It takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
  • Federal law protects the personal information you share during the census.
  • Census data are used to distribute Congressional seats to states, to make decisions about what community services to provide, and to distribute $400 billion in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments each year.

Where should you be counted?
Most people should be counted in the residence in which they live most of the time. However, some individuals or groups have unique lving situations. More Information

Retired Military Personnel and Other Americans Currently Overseas
If you are a retired Military Service Member or an American living overseas at the time of the US Census count (March - July 2010) and consider yourself a Moorhead, MN resident, please contact Kristie Leshovsky at 218-299-5332 or Kristie.Leshovsky@cityofmoorhead.com to obtain a 2010 Census Questionnaire. Census questionnaires will NOT be sent to Military APO boxes or to Americans currently overseas.

If you are an active member of the U.S. Military, you will be counted using US Census Group Quarters forms.

Census on Campus!
The Census on Campus Initiative seeks to educate, engage, and mobilize college and university students, administration, faculty, and parents so that in the 2010 Census, every individual is counted-once, and in the right place.

Historically, the highly mobile college student population living on and off campus has been hard to count - in part, because many people believe that college students are counted on their parents' questionnaires. However, students living away from home will receive their own questionnaires, so to prevent students from being counted twice (or not at all!) in the census, they and their parents need to know this.

As powerful grassroots organizers, students and other educational leaders can have an influential voice in reaching others with the message of the 2010 Census.

News Releases:

  • Census Job Training and Testing
The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting temporary, part-time Census takers for the 2010 Census. These short-term jobs offer good pay, flexible hours, paid training, and reimbursement for authorized work-related expenses, such as mileage incurred while conducting Census work.

Individuals interested in working for the US Census in 2010 must first pass a test. People Escaping Poverty Project (PEPP) will be hosting pre-test trainings on the Census test from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on February 12th, 19th and 26th at Centro Cultural 1014 19th St S. Following the training, a US Census representative will be available to administer the Census test from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The best scores will be considered for employment and there are no interviews.

Census taker jobs are excellent for people who want to work part-time, those who are between jobs, or just about anyone who wants to earn extra money while performing an important service for their community.

Veterans and multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

To register for the PEPP Census pre-test training classes, please call 218-236-5434.

For information on where you can take a US Census employment test, please call 1-866-861-2010.

  • Mayor asks Moorhead "Snowbirds" to be counted at home
Retirees who head south for the winter should be counted where they live most of the time, and it benefits Moorhead and Minnesota to have them counted here-each resident who fills out a census form is responsible for bringing as much as $14,000 back to the state over 10 years, based on the resources the federal government distributes based on Census counts. Minnesota's Congressional representation may also be at stake. "It means a great deal to our community to include these residents in the local Census count," says Mayor Mark Voxland. "We really need everyone."

The Census form will be mailed in mid-March to every address in the country, but many retirees will not have returned to Minnesota by that time. Moorhead residents should not fill out the form in the state they are visiting, but instead ask for a form when they return to Moorhead. Up to date information on the Census and how to request a form will be posted to www.cityofmoorhead.com as it becomes available.

The City of Moorhead is working to get this message out to the "Snowbird" community through the media, the Senior Citizen Center at the Hjemkomst Center, and local church bulletins.

UPDATE: The Census Bureau will be sending forms out to all residential addresses in mid-March and snowbirds will receive a Census questionnaire at both their Minnesota and snowbird address. Further, the US Post Office will not forward Census forms so it is very important that you not fill out forms delivered to your snowbird address if you consider yourself a Minnesotan.

It is recommended that you NOT answer the questionnaire sent to your snowbird address. If you plan to return to Minnesota before June 2010, please disregard the mailing you received from the Census at your snowbird address and wait to fill out your Census questionnaire form until you get back to Minnesota.

    Important Dates
March 2010: Census Bureau sends out questionnaires
April 1, 2010: Census Bureau requests that all questionnaires be returned by this date
Mid-to-Late April 2010: Census Bureau begins sending out replacement questionnaires for those households that did not return one by April 1
May - July 2010: Census Bureau begins sending workers out door-to-door if you have not returned your questionnaire

Upcomming Events:

Following the training, a US Census representative will be available to administer the Census test from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
