Gooseberry Park large shelter has become structurally unsound due to years of flood damage. The shelter is scheduled to be torn down and a new shelter will be built in its place. The new shelter will be "flood proof" meaning the beams and a majority of the construction will be concrete and able to flood without causing structural damage.
Pending approval from City Council, work on the new shelter is expected to begin sometime during the summer of 2010. Below are drawings of the new shelter.

At the August 24, 2009 meeting, Moorhead City Council members approved a resolution to approve plans and specifications and authorize advertisement for bids for a park improvement project.
Improvement plans for the park include the extension of sanitary sewer and water utilities to the site, a park building/shelter, a play area, and the reconstruction of a portion of the roadway. Picnic tables and trail improvements will also be included in the project.
Construction costs are currently estimated at approximately $607,000 and will be financed through the City's General Fund from money that was reserved for park improvements from the sale of City-owned land to Menards.

Southside Regional Park |

After two years of construction, Moorhead's newest Regional Park will soon be a hub of activity. Work on Southside Regional Park began in the summer of 2006 with general site grading and the construction of 11 soccer fields, 4 baseball fields, trails, park shelters and field irrigation. Phase 2 construction, including the addition of the entry road, parking and additional trails is nearing completion.
Construction of the concession/restroom buildings will begin Spring 2009.
A concession/restroom building is planned at the ball fields and a concession/restroom/office building is planned at the soccer fields. The soccer building will be designed to allow for expansion.
Future plans call for upgrading two of the soccer fields to serve as championship fields, 4 additional standard soccer fields, and soccer building expansion. It was expected that a portion of the cost of the work would be offset by funding from the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission along with a designation as the Northwest Regional Amateur Sports Facility. Future plans would also provide neighborhood park amenities, such as tennis courts, play areas, and a picnic shelter in the northeast corner of the park, along with a maintenance building, completing the trails and landscaping.

Miracle Field |

Plans are underway for the development of a 'Miracle Field' to be located in the Southside Regional Park. A miracle field is a baseball/softball field with an asphalt base with a specialized rubber top surface. The rubberized field allows the balls to bounce "true". These fields are typically used for adaptive Miracle Leagues and for youth leagues. A miracle field was always envisioned to be part of the Southside Regional Park and has been a priority for the Moorhead Park Advisory Board.
In January 2009, the Fargo Moorhead Rotary Clubs stepped forward with interest in taking on this project in its entirety. Since then approval has been given from all FM Rotary Clubs to make this one of their primary projects. Also approved was their membership into the Miracle League which then provides the plans and specifications for the construction of the field. The Northern League baseball league (of which the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks are members) has also made the miracle field one of their charities of choice for the year.
Construction is dependent on fundraising right now, but the fall of 2009 has been set as a target start date. Groundbreaking for the event will be held May 15, 2009.
The current proposed location is immediately north of the recently constructed parking lot in close proximity to the restrooms and concession area.

Matson Field Fundraising/Renovation Effort |
Constructed in 1958 with the current grandstand in the 70s, Matson Field has been
the City's marquis facility for baseball tournament play and is the current host
field for many Moorhead teams. The "Moorhead Field of Dreams" campaign, spearheaded
by the user groups, is an effort to renovate Matson Field with private and public
funds to position the facility as a first-rate site for regional and national tournaments.
Renovation concepts proposed by the Field of Dreams group include:
- Dugout improvements, including drainage improvements and better ramp access
- Seating, press box, concession stand, and plaza area improvements
- The possibility of constructing a roof structure above fan seating
A large private fundraising effort, including a major gifts initiative, is scheduled
to kick-off in the near future. More details regarding this project are available
