Participate in Moorhead, Minnesota, city government by voting! Look for information below on absentee ballots, absentee voting by mail, election judges, polling places, and voter eligibility.

The City of Moorhead general election will be held on Tuesday, the 3rd day of November, 2009. The polls will be open on said day from 7 o'clock A.M. until 8 o'clock P.M. for the purpose of voting to fill the following offices (candidates listed in alphabetical order):

Voter Eligibility
A person is eligible to vote, if at the time of the election, he or she is: 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the United States, resided in Minnesota for at least 20 days immediately preceding the election; are not under court-ordered guardianship in which the court order revokes the right to vote, have not been found by a court to be legally incompetent to vote; and have the right to vote (if convicted of a felony, the felony sentence has expired or the sentence has been discharged). For information on registering to vote, please contact the Clay County Auditor's office at 218.299.5006.

Absentee Voting
Absentee voting occurs within the 30 days before each election. Eligible voters may vote by absentee ballot for the following reasons: 1) absent from the precinct; 2) illness or disability; 3) unable to go to the polling place due to a religious observance or belief; 4) service as an election judge in another precinct. Absentee ballots will be available at the City Clerk's Office, Moorhead City Hall, 500 Center Avenue - 3rd Floor, Moorhead, starting 30 days prior to Election Day.

Absentee Voting by Mail
An absentee ballot may be sent to you by completing the Absentee Ballot Application and returning the completed form to the City of Moorhead, PO Box 779, Moorhead, MN 56561-0779. The (City) General Election ballot will be mailed to you when available.

The City of Moorhead will be reviewing its current polling locations for possible revisions to better meet the needs of the Moorhead residents. However, until notified otherwise of any change, the following sites continue to serve as the Moorhead polling locations/places.

Election Judges
Citizens appointed to serve as election judges staff Moorhead's 13 polling places/locations. To serve as an election judge, you must be:

  • Eligible to vote in Minnesota
  • Affiliated with a major political party
  • Able to read, write and speak English
  • Trained and currently certified as an election judge (training will be offered in 2008)

Duties performed by an election judge include, but may not be limited to: set up for the 7 a.m. opening of the poll; distribute & collect ballots, register new voters, help voters requiring assistance, process absentee ballots, record and certify vote totals. Election judges are paid an hourly wage. State law allows time off from work without loss of wages to serve as an election judge with 20 days prior notice to the employer. Judges may work at either or both the Primary election and General election.
