The American Planning Association Minnesota Chapter has named the Moorhead River Corridor Master Plan as the winner of its “Planning in Context” award for 2015. The Plan was implemented to address the challenges and also very significant opportunities resulting from the City’s acquisition of flood-prone properties adjacent to the Red River. The plan, which was developed with a great deal of public participation, guides future management and maintenance of the river corridor, with attention to:
- Community Needs
- Flood mitigation
- Transportation
- Recreation
- Public/private property
- Natural Resource Preservation and Restoration
The plan has already resulted in river corridor projects completed in 2014 and underway in 2015 through partnerships with the River Keepers, Audubon Society, and Plains Art Museum. The City continues to seek funding for additional river corridor enhancements consistent with the plan.
