Update on 6 St and 10 St S sewer work
In order to reduce cost and construction impacts, the project to repair very old brick sewer pipe on 6 St and 10 St S is being done a little differently. Normally, the entire pipe would be excavated and new pipe would be put in place. For this project, City engineers decided to “line” the existing pipe with a Cured In Place Pipe (CIPP). This mostly trenchless method saves on cost and construction impacts.
First, the contractor cleaned the pipe, which meant that wastewater was pumped around the work zones. The temporary bypass piping is placed on the streets, and requires the roads to be closed to through traffic. Due to the unusual shape and size of the brick sewer pipes, the contractor needed to accurately measure the pipes before they could place an order to have the liners fabricated. That is what has caused the road closures for the last couple of weeks even though it appears that work is not progressing.
This project has two separate work zones that are in different stages of construction. The 10 St lining from 2 Ave to 4 Ave S is completed; crews began inserting the liner from 4 Ave to 6 Ave S on July 26. This project area should be complete about August 2.
In the 6 St project area from Main to 4 Ave S and 4 Ave S from 6 St to 8 St, the contractor has measured the pipe and ordered the liner. It should be delivered within two weeks and installation will begin about August 9. It should take about two weeks to complete those six blocks of sewer.
