Moorhead Police were dispatched to Burger King on Holiday Drive in Moorhead for a disturbance involving weapons. The investigation found that Joshua Carney (1-8-88) along with a female companion were crossing 24th Ave S in the 800 block. A vehicle that turned westbound onto 24th Ave S did not initially see the pedestrians as they were not in a designated crosswalk. Carney responded to the vehicle by giving the driver and the female passenger the middle finger with both hands. As the vehicle drove past Carney and his companion, the female passenger in the vehicle returned the same exchange to Carney. The vehicle came to a stop at a red light at 8th St. Carney approached the female’s side of the stopped vehicle and began a verbal confrontation. The driver of the vehicle exited and saw that Carney was holding a folding knife with the blade exposed. The male grabbed a piece of oak lumber that was small enough to fit in his hand but was approximately 2.5 feet in length. The female passenger told the driver to get back in the car as she had called the police. Carney and his companion walked over to Burger King and the vehicle with the other parties stayed within sight as they relayed information to dispatch. Carney observed the vehicle outside of Burger King and made contact. The male stepped out of his vehicle and Carney had landscaping rocks in his clinched fist and struck the male in the face causing noticeable facial injuries. Officers arrested Carney for Second Degree Assault (weapon) Third Degree Assault (significant injury) Fifth Degree Assault (minor injury/threat) and Disorderly Conduct. Carney is being held at the Clay County Jail pending charges. The 31 year old male victim from Moorhead went to a local hospital on self-transport for care.
