The City of Moorhead offers our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the nine-year-old child who drowned yesterday at Buffalo River State Park in Clay County. The child was participating in the Moorhead Police Summer Youth Program. The details of the incident are not yet known and a full investigation is being conducted by the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, with the full cooperation of the Moorhead Police Department. At this time, the Sheriff’s Department has not yet released the name of the drowning victim.

We have been informed that Ellen Hopkins Elementary will offer grief counseling tomorrow for students who are dealing with the sudden loss of their classmate. The City of Moorhead has also arranged grief counseling services for Summer Youth Program mentors who participated in yesterday’s program activities, and those responding to the incident.

We are deeply saddened and ask the community for their emotional support for all those affected by this tragedy. It is our understanding that the Sheriff’s Department will share more details about the incident as those details become available.
