Make Moorhead Home Property Tax Rebate Renewed through 2018

Valuable incentive to build a new home in Moorhead

Post Date:10/25/2016 10:44 am

The City of Moorhead, Moorhead Area Public Schools, and Clay County officials have taken formal actions to extended the Make Moorhead Home Property Tax Rebate through December 31, 2018.  For new homes built in 2017 and 2018, this means that home buyers will receive a rebate of all general taxes paid for the first two years after their home is completed and the property is fully valued for tax purposes.  There is no maximum value on the rebate program, and both land and building are included in the valuation.  The rebate does not affect special assessments or special levies.

The City of Moorhead has offered a locally funded tax rebate program since 2012.  There have been more than 600 homes built during the first four years of the program, adding $39 million in taxable value and generating cumulative property tax revenues of $1.54 million.  Year to date 2016, there have been 122 homes built under the Make Moorhead Home program.

Housing industry professions indicate that the new construction rebate is important to new homebuyers as they are making decisions where to build, and the City of Moorhead hears directly from home buyers that the rebate was an important consideration in their decisions to build new homes.
