About the Department

The Moorhead Police Department was established in 1881 and currently has 61 sworn officers and 17 civilian employees. We believe in community policing and providing professional police services to our residents and large college population. The department has 36 patrol officers, 3 school resource officers, 9 detectives, 7 sergeants, and 2 lieutenants, a Captain, Deputy Chief and Chief. There is plenty of opportunity for growth and interesting assignments including field training, internal instructor positions, K-9, SWAT / Bomb / Negotiations, School Resource Officers, DARE, and Investigations. About the Community

The City of Moorhead is a community of 44,000 people located in a metropolitan area of over 238,000 people. The metro area is home to excellent educational institutions with Minnesota State University Moorhead, Concordia College, M|State, and North Dakota State University (Fargo, ND) as well as excellent primary and secondary public and private schools. The area offers great shopping, restaurants, entertainment including USHL Hockey, Professional Baseball, Bluestem Center for the Arts, an International Airport and is close to lakes and forested areas of northwestern Minnesota. Applicants do not need to be MN POST licensed or eligible at the time of testing, but must be licensed or eligible by the date of conditional offer of employment
.  Interested persons should at least be near completion of a Professional Peace Officer Education (PPOE) or eligible to be POST licensed by September 2021.  A hiring list will be generated from this process and may be used for additional hiring rounds. Licensing information is available through the MN Post Board. Candidates must possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver’s license or equivalent out‑of‑state license.

Hiring Process

The hiring process includes an on-line test, oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological examination, fitness and medical examination.

  • December 29 and 30th  (those selected will be notified of a specific date and time)

Salary Range

The salary range is $54,792 to $81,445 per year. Benefits include full employee health care coverage, Minnesota PERA retirement, and life insurance. Family, dental, and vision insurance packages and other investment options are available. See Employee Benefits for further information. Lateral entry credit not exceeding 4 years as a patrol officer is possible for qualifying applicants.

  • What is the hiring process for temporary seasonal positions?

    It can take up to a month to make a decision on a position.  Due to the volume of applications received for seasonal positions, we are not able to notify candidates not selected.  Seasonal applications will remain on file for that season and that position and Supervisors may contact you if a position does come open in the future.

  • How long does the hiring process take for permanent positions?

    Employment decisions can take two-three months to fill a position due to several regulated steps required, interview procedures, background checks and pre-employment practices.     State law outlines how veterans’ preference is applied to qualified candidates. If you are claiming veterans’ preference, you must submit proof of your eligibility (such as form DD214) along with your application for employment.

  • What is the City of Moorhead compensation plan?

    In order to maintain pay equity compliance, as required by the State of Minnesota Local Government Pay Equity Act, municipalities are required to establish a job evaluation system to determine the comparable work value of each employee class. The City of Moorhead has established a job classification system and compensation plan for all employee job classes. This classification and compensation plan assigns a salary range for each job classification. These salary ranges are compared to actual wage rates in the market (competing employers/government entities) every few years. Employees are hired onto the wage schedule at a specific step and, assuming a favorable review, will advance to the next step on the wage schedule on an annual basis.   • What data about applicants for employment are public?

    According to state law, applicant data is private except when the applicant is certified as eligible for appointment to a vacancy or when applicants are finalists for a position in public employment. The following data on applicants is public: veteran status, job history, education and training, relevant test scores, rank on eligible list, and work availability.

  • Can two or more relatives work for the City of Moorhead at the same time?

    The City of Moorhead restricts employment of more than one member of a family or persons related by blood or marriage if it creates a supervisory relationship. Employment of a family member refers to spouse, parent (including in-law), grandparents, aunts and uncles, children, sibling (including step and in-law), nieces and nephews, and significant others. There may be other sensitive positions or situations where placement of an employee’s family member is inappropriate and will not be allowed.
