Access/Premises
Address numbers on building are visible from the street
Fire department access roads are unobstructed
Combustibles are removed from the exterior of the building
Dumpsters are located at least 5 ft. from combustible siding, overhangs, eaves, doors, and windows
Egress (exiting)
Exit corridors and doors are easily recognizable, functional, and unobstructed
Doors with self-closers are not blocked open
Doors and egress windows open easily without the use of special knowledge, tools, or equipment
Doors with keyed entries have a sign that states "THIS DOOR MUST REMAIN UNLOCKED DURING BUSINESS HOURS"
Residential occupancies have emergency escape windows and window wells that are maintained in an operable condition and free from obstruction
Electrical Safety
Cover plates are present on all switches, receptacles, and junction boxes
Circuit breakers or fuses are labeld properly
30" of clearance in front of all electrical panel boxes
No multiple cube adapters, only power tap type with built-in circuit protection
Emergency Lighting
Required emergency lighting is operable
Means of egress is illuminated when building is occupied
Exit Signs
Required exit signs are illuminated
Does the battery back-up work (push the test button, exit sign should illuminate)
Fire Alarm Systems
Fire alarm systems need an annual service by a credible fire alarm service technician (NFPA72)
Fire Drills
Required drills are conducted and records are kept on site
Required evacuation and fire safety plans are posted
Fire Extinguishers
Minimum 2A 10 BC rated extinguisher on site
Travel distance is less then 75' to an extinguisher (on the same level)
Visible and accessible
Serviced within the past 12 months
Properly Mounted (next exit doors where possible)
Fire and Smoke Separations
All fire and smoke separations are maintained and in operable condition (fire doors, fire walls, smoke separations, and smoke/fire dampers in HVAC)
Holes or breaches in rated partitions/barriers are fileld with fire rated caulking
Fire Suppression Systems
Storage is maintained at least 18" below all sprinkler head deflectors
Annual service has been performed by a qualified fire sprinkler contractor
Commercial cooking hood suppression systems have been serviced and cleaned in the past 6 months
Heat Producing Appliances
Portable electric heaters are used safely as described per appliance listing
No open flame unvented heaters are permitted in a commercial occupancy
Clearance between ignition sources, such as light fixtures, heaters, and flame producing devices and combustible storage is maintained in a safe manner
Housekeeping
Storage is neat and orderly
Material subject to spontaneous ignition, such as oily rags are stored in a listed container
Storage is maintained 2 feet below ceiling in non-sprinklered rooms and 18" below sprinkler head deflectors in sprinklered areas
Mechanical Hazards
Venting for exhaust products of combustion is intact for appliances (water heaters, furnaces, and dryers)
Appliances have adequate clearance from combustibles
Smoke Detection
Commercial fire alarms have been tested and inspected within the past 12 months NFPA 72) by a reputable fire alarm contractor
Residential units are equipped with smoke detection as directed by the MN State Fire Code
Storage of Compressed Gasses
Compressed gas cylinders are chained and nested to prevent falling
Storage of Flammable and Combustible Liquids
Quantities in excess of 10 gallons used for maintenance and operation of equipment are stored in a storage cabinet listed for flammable liquid storage
